It was a transaction between God the Father and God the Son. It was the Son bearing our sin ‘in His own body on the tree’, and the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy of Isaiah, who had said that the Messiah would be ‘wounded for our transgressions,’ and that ‘with his striped we shall be healed’ (Isa. 53:5). Indeed, as Paul puts it elsewhere, ‘God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself’ (2 Cor 5:19).”
