So a while back a friend of mine was told from a fellow student that the reason she had a chronic health problem was due to the prevalence of sin in her life. This is obviously crap. Recently he posted a blog concerning his beliefs and my friend showed it to me… here is what I would say to him if I were to waste my time being friends with him on facebook… .

His Blog:

My beliefs about suffering aren’t really complicated. I believe that God’s will is to see all people prosper financially and be in perfect health.

Well that obviously raises the question of:”If God wants all people to be healed and suffer, than why doesn’t he heal them? Or why did Job (who was incredibly righteous) suffer? Why does Paul call us to suffer as Christ suffered?

Basically it all started at the garden of Eden. When God created man he gave us free choice. Right now you can turn your head and blink if you want to, you can do pretty much anything. And with that freedom came the choice to sin by disobeying God’s first commandment. When Adam and Eve took the fruit and ate it they sowed into sin, and what was reaped from that choice was death, sickness, a life of toil etc…

The concept of sowing and reaping is used many times in the bible. To illustrate financial concepts such as tithing and what not. However it also applies to healing. If you sin than the result of that sin is sickness and death.

This is why Job suffered. If you look in Job 3:25 it says “For the thing that I have feared has come upon me, and what I have dreaded has happened to me.” (NKJV)
Job feared what happened to him, in fact he “greatly” feared. That doesn’t sound like he was a little concerned that he could lose everything, but that it was a constant huge fear. By fearing Job gave the devil a legal right to come and afflict him. He sowed into fear, and he reaped suffering. A suffering that could have been avoided if he had trusted in God and not listened to the lies of the devil that caused him to fear.

Everywhere in the bible where Christians are told that we should suffer with Jesus, the word suffer is not to suffer physical pain but to suffer persecution or rejection for being a Christian. If I go to China and proclaim that I am a Christian, than I’m going to be persecuted and probably thrown into prison or whatever.

See, there is a lie that has been spoken into the church that tells us God “allows” sickness on us that he can teach us to be more like him. If we’re disobeying him than he allows the devil to inflict us with something. He uses to devils sicknesses to teach us lessons on how to be like Jesus.

In Isaiah 53:4-5 the prophet Isaiah proclaimed these words. ”
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed. ”

The word grief in that passage literally means sickness and and the word sorrows literally means pain.

So Jesus suffered for our sicknesses and pain so that we could suffer to become more like Jesus? That doesn’t make sense. Why don’t you just start beating yourself up so that you could be more like Jesus by tomorrow. Intensive care rooms would be incredible places of angelic visitations and what not, because people are being conformed into the image of Christ. No thats just dumb.

Why would Jesus pay the price for our healing and then the Father allow sickness on us? If that were true, than it would be a divided house and everything you believe as a Christian would be false.
Did Jesus ever approach someone and then say “Oh wow. I’m sorry but I can’t heal you, because my father is using this disease to teach you something”? How can you go to a hospital and tell someone who has a terminal illness, “hey God wants you to suffer, so just enjoy the ride”?
If you caused your child to become ill as a form of punishment you would be called abusive. So why do we put this role on the Father who has perfect love?

In Acts 10:38 Peter preaches “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

Jesus healed ALL, that means EVERYBODY. And there was no confusion as to the origin of the affliction. It was all from the devil, there was no doubt.
Jesus only did what He saw the Father do, and only said what He heard the Father say, and Jesus healed EVERYbody. There should be no doubt.

Jesus even taught us to pray: “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven…”
Does sickness exist in heaven? does pain exist in heaven? No, not at all.
Jesus even says “your will be done” How much clearer can it get, God’s will is that all should be healed.

So why isn’t everybody healed when we pray? I’ll answer that in my next note.

————————————————————————

My Response:

1. You’re a Douchey McDoogle preaching a false gospel.

2. Stop making love to Joel Osteen.

3. I love how you take scripture out of context.
“Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven…” means that Jesus wants God’s WILL to be done on earth AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. He wants Gods will to be done… not for earth to be like heaven.. that won’t happen for a while (depending on your eschatology lol). No where does it say, and earth will be like heaven if you pray this prayer and sickness will cease for those who love me… its a prayer about God’s will, not about earth = heaven…. and if you say it is God’s will for everyone to be rich and healthy, then you have a very ignorant theology.

4. “So Jesus suffered for our sicknesses and pain so that we could suffer to become more like Jesus? ” Where does it say that Jesus suffered for our earthly physical pain? Oh wait, the Bible doesn’t say that because this is a bunch of BS. Jesus died to SAVE sinners from SIN. One of my pastors has HIV/AIDs…. so basically if God doesn’t heal him miraculously then he must be a horrible sinner and will die a painful death in vain? No, God is using his life as a testament to His glory. If your God only heals those who live pure then your God is very distant from the God of the Bible. Also the Bible doesn’t say “Christians are healthy and rich because I love them more than those filthy pagans.”

5. “However it also applies to healing. If you sin than the result of that sin is sickness and death.” You got the second half right, but the first is horribly wrong. The wages of sin is death! Yay! You know some scripture! But God does not say that good works = healing and that righteous living equal exemption from pain. Your god is bitter and is out to force Christians to follow his way or else he will punish them. God doesn’t care about matters of the flesh, He is concerned with matters of the heart.

6. Your interpretation of Job is probably the most laughable concept I have heard concerning that book… God plainly states why he allows for the pain in Job’s life.
-To go against what God/the Bible says is to clearly believe a lie of Satan, so you should be expecting to get hepatitis in a few days.
-God clearly states that Job was an upright and blameless man, who feared him and turned away from evil (Job 1:8)
-The purpose for God allowing Job to suffer is clear. God does it for the glory of His own name. Satan bets him that Job will desert God if he loses his blessings and God says “No Satan, Job loves me and knows me and he will glorify me until the end… no matter how bad I let you make it, I will be glorified” Your crappy nit-picking of scripture in order to prove your crap-filled gospel is clearly disproved by the WORDS OF GOD. *You better repent soon and I can see a tumor in your future*

7. So I’m pretty sure we are called to be like Jesus, but I guess your Jesus isn’t the homeless Jesus of the Bible… you have the Jesus that wears a pink robe, drinks herbal tea, drives a cabriolet while listening to the Spice Girls, trying to make people feel ‘good’ so that they can be as comfortable as he is. I’m pretty sure Jesus told us not to store up treasures on earth, but store them in heaven and that we can’t love both God and money because they conflict *Matt 6:19-25*(this does not mean that if we love God then money will show up, because if we use that logic, then if we love money then God will show up).

By definition your god is a god of works, legalism and straight up douche-baggery. So if Christians aren’t perfect then ‘God’ punishes them by making them poor or sick. Wow, your god sucks. I use a lower-case g, because your idea of the real God is not the God of the bible, but rather a pagan spin off… yeah thats right, I called you out on your health and wealth god that you love because you want to have justification for your own greed.

I hope that made you smile and will help you in your day to day battle against health and wealthers…

Courtesy of Dr. John Piper from his book When I Don’t Desire God….

“Jesus once described his coming like this: ‘The light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil’ (John 3:19). Here the issue of salvation is loving or hating the light. Love darkness, or love light. That’s the crisis of the soul. But what is love for darkness? It’s preferring darkness, liking darkness, wanting darkness, running to darkness, being glad with darkness. But all of that is what Jesus demands for himself: ‘Prefer my light like my fellowship, want my wisdom, run to my refuge, be glad in my grade. Above all, delight in me as a Person.’ Look around on all that the world can give; then say with the apostle Paul, ‘My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better’ (Phil. 1:23). That is what it means to love Christ. And to have no love for Him is to be accursed.”

So back in October my friend Jimmy told me that Mark Driscoll was coming out with a new book entitled Vintage Jesus. As soon as he told me I got on my phone and pre-ordered a copy (luckily I was one of the first 1000, so I got a signed copy). Basically this book is the answers to the most common questions about Jesus and is based on the sermon series Mark did back in the summer of ‘06.

So my copy of the book came in a while back and it took me way to long to dedicate my time to read this book, but once I did it definitely payed off. If you are a ‘non’ reader, this would be a great book for you because Mark’s writing style is very conversational and his humor is beyond witty and hilarious.
The books website reads:

Roughly two thousand years ago, Jesus was born in a dumpy, rural, hick town, not unlike those today where guys change their own oil, think pro wrestling is real, find women who chew tobacco sexy, and eat a lot of Hot Pockets with their uncle-daddy. Jesus’ mom was a poor, unwed teenage girl who was often mocked for claiming she conceived via the Holy Spirit. Most people thought she concocted the crazy story to cover the fact she was knocking boots with some guy in the backseat of a car at the prom. Jesus was adopted by a simple carpenter named Joseph and spent the first thirty years of his life in obscurity, swinging a hammer with his dad.

In Vintage Jesus, one of America’s most influential young pastors teams up with a seasoned theologian to lead you on a hilarious theological journey chasing Jesus through Scripture and pop culture. The authors provide timeless answers to twelve timely questions about the most important man who has ever lived. Each chapter concludes with answers to common questions about each subject.

When reading a book about common Jesus questions you don’t really expect to get convicted (at least I didn’t), the chapter What Makes Jesus Superior to Other Saviors? punched me in the face. Mark always has a way of making you feel great and then whipping out his spiritual wanker and slapping you across the face with it (Sorry if that was too graphic, but its true). The basic theme of the chapter is that we tend to create functional saviors in our lives that are not Jesus. Whether it is a game, a car, a person, or what have you, they become our god and we essentially put Jesus on the back-burner daily. Sadly I do this often and create my own little idols instead of placing Jesus first on my daily to-do list. This needs to change, not only for me, but for all of us.

So… basically you should go out and buy this book. I will leave you with this quote…

“[Jesus] Joining them later at the party at Matthew’s house was nothing short of a very bad hip-hop video, complete with women in clear heels, dudes with their pants around their ankles and handguns in their underwear strap, lots of gold teeth, bling, spinners on camels, cheap liquor, and grinding to really loud music with a lot of bass. When word got out to the religious folks, they were perplexed as to how Jesus could roll with such a jacked-up posse. Jesus’ answer was purely priestly. Jesus said that they were sick and needed mercy.”

So I donated blood today. Saved 3 people’s lives. But seriously, everyone who is 17+ should go out and donate some blood. It doesn’t hurt (just a pinch here and there) and even if you are ‘afraid’ of needles you should suck it up and help save someone’s life, don’t be a selfish loser keeping all of your blood to yourself.

It sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Yesterday Ben Stein’s new documentary, Expelled, came out. Tonight, Lauren Matt and I went to see it. It was a very insightful movie concerning the whole evolution v. intelligent design argument. The movie presents that the whole issue isn’t even considered an argument anymore because the science powers that be don’t even allow for the concept of intelligent design to be discussed. The movie does not side on either end of the argument but rather is promoting the freedom of speech and thought in the realm of science. Ben even gets Richard Dawkins to admit their might be a ‘designer.’ Anywho… if you are an intellect and enjoy expanding your knowledge you should go see it. You should also see it if your life and/or career has anything to do with science.

Spend the $8 and see it.

Jesus crying in space is almost as bad as Jesus healing the liberty bell. Seriously Christians, do something to advance the faith, not make us look home-schooled.
