So today was the first service at Pasyor Kelly Lyon’s church, Epic Remix. Yeah, the name is kinda gay with the addition of the word ‘remix’… if it was only “Epic” that’d be rather epic, but now its kinda…meh. So the name Epic comes from the fact that the Bible is an epic story and the part Remix comes from the fact that Pastor Kelly plans to look at the Bible in a new way. Not in some crazy hippie way, but in a way that it can be used to change the world (as is was intended to be). The service was pretty good for an inaugural service. It opened up with two scripture readings; Ephesians 3:2-10 and Exodus 3. And then we did some worshipping and then Pastor Kelly gave his vision for the church and gave a small message. The gist of the message was that when people cry out, God responds in some way shape or form and the body of Epic wants to be a means for God’s response. I really enjoy the fact that the whole goal of the church is be a body of doers, rather than to be a body of sitters and talkers. The church is pretty sweet overall. I really like how Kelly said that not everyone is going to agree with everything and that is ok. It is ok to ask tough questions. It is ok to have honest conversations. Its ok to be real.
They are planning on giving away 75% of what they are given to various ministries around the globe. They have already given LoveBags $1000 for their Thanksgiving event *that has yet to be determined.*
He also quoted Bell and Miller a few times, which was pretty cool and expected.
Here is a small glimpse of the books he quoted and recommended *all of which I own*

That made me smile.
So basically it seems like it is going to be a really nice church to be going to (in addition to the occasional and likely Calvary visits).

What really gets me is the church of doers. When we come back… we are straight up going with you. Just reading your first experience there made me happy. Plus any pastor that doesn’t say Rob Bell is the devil is kudos in my book. holler.

October 30th, 2007 at 2:59 amThis is shocking. I took mission classes with Pastor Kelly and looked up to him a lot. It`s sad that he has gone over the emergent road. I encourage you alkl to really dig deep into the emergent theology and search your bibles to see if they match up. There is nothing wrong with being real and asking questions, that`s not the problem with the emergent movement, it`s how far they go out of tehir way to blend with the world. We`re suppose to be different, not just like them. Look at the Jewish people, God set them apart and we`re grafted into Israel so He wants the same thing from us. I know most of you will disagree with me, and I really don`t care. I`m not going to say that Rob Bell is the devil, but he certainly isn`t giving you 100% bible truth.
October 31st, 2007 at 8:20 pmHe isn’t a crazy emergent Brian McLaren follwer… he is still the same old Kelly.

November 2nd, 2007 at 6:41 pmThere is a difference between emergent, and emerging, not sure which is what here, but maybe that can help clear up misunderstandings. I haven’t read anything by Rob Bell or McLaren, but a book that is pretty radical is The Shaping of Things to Come: Innovation and Mission For the 21st- Century Church by Michael Frost & Alan Hirsch. I did read that and enjoyed it.
I’d recommend the read, don’t accept everything that is in there about how to do church, but these authors are calling for a revolutionizing of the way church is done.
November 18th, 2007 at 11:41 pmThe suggestions should be critiqued, but I think there is some wisdom and challenges to be taken to heart.
The questions which must be asked is what exactly is church? Is it a group of people, is it an activity? Is it both? What are the bare bones of what must be present for church to be church?
